This TRG – Hot Work Cutting and Welding Awareness training course Provides and skills and knowledge required for Safe cutting and welding on mine and petroleum sites

This course will provide training on:

  • How to prevent an accidental hot work fire/explosion,
  • Controls you should always use while doing hot work,
  • How manage and implement an effective hot work program.

Increasing awareness about health hazards linked to hot works such as: welding, oxy cutting, heating ETC:  has changed the way hot work is performed and the equipment we use to protect ourselves. This course is intended to help workers understand the importance of hot works safe systems of work.

 

COURSE TOPICS

  1. Chapter 1: Planning for Hot Works

    Topics covered:

    1. Technical reference guide (TRG) for safe cutting and welding on mine and petroleum sites.
    2. Duty of care.
    3. Classification of Hot work
    4. Hot works risk assessment process
    5. Completing a Job safety analysis (JSA)
    6. Hot work Procedures and permit systems
    7. Hot works emergency procedure

    Chapter 2: Performing Hot Works 

    Topics covered:

    1. Screening, Warning signs
    2. Safe use and handling of oxy/fuel gas equipment
    3. Hot work observer Procedures and responsibilities
    4. Electric welding safety, Manual metal arc welding equipment components and safe use, Residual current devices (RCDs)
    5. Metal Welding Safety, Welding Categories
    6. Circuit Voltages, Electric shock
    7. Site welding, Grinder safety, Ventilation
    8. Respiratory protective equipment (RPE)
    9. Welding Fume/Airborne Hazards Common to Welding, Hazardous areas
    10. Lower and Upper explosive limits, Exposure standards.
    11. Portable gas monitoring systems, Hot works equipment inspection
    12. Isolations, Hot works exclusion zone, Fire safe 

    Chapter 3: Conclude Hot Works

    Topics covered:

    1. Sign off hot work permit
    2. Leaving the work site in a tidy and safe condition
    3. Hot work observer responsibility on completion of hot works task
    4. 7 basic post task checks.

  • WTIA Technical Note 8: Recommended Oxy-Fuel Gas Daily Inspection and Pre-Start Checklist

  • NSW Resources Regulator: TRG-Hot Work (Cutting and Welding) at Mines and Petroleum sites
  • Australian Standard 2444-2001 Portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets – selection and location

PREREQUISITES & ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

To enroll in this course participants must:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Provide a copy of their photo identification (driver's licence, proof of age card, or passport)
  • Demonstrate the ability to speak and write English to a basic level & have basic numeracy skills
  • Be able to speak English well enough to carry out work safely with other people
  • please inform us upon registration if you feel you have any literacy or numeracy difficulties. Some reasonable adjustments to the course can be made to assist.

 

COURSE DURATION

  • 4 Hours

 

PARTICIPANTS WILL NEED TO BRING

  • Photo identification as listed in the prerequisites for this course
  • PPE including protective footwear will be required to be worn for the practical training session, 

ASSESSMENT PROCESS

  • The course will be a combination of theory & practical training where participants will be required to demonstrate industry skills & knowledge included in this course.
  • Students will be required to pass a written assessment to complete the course all critical components must be demonstrated and answered correctly

 

COURSE OUTCOME

Upon completion, participants deemed competent will be issued with a:

  • Statement of attendance for 
    • TRG – Hot Work Cutting and Welding Awareness training course - Safe cutting and welding on mine and petroleum sites

  • This course is a Non-Accredited Course so no units of competency are attained or recorded on your USI transcript.
